CMSD Teachers Join the Cleveland Kindness Challenge

Cleveland Metropolitan School District teachers and students have been creatively staying connected since COVID-19 prompted the large urban school district to go fully remote in March of 2020.

Nine months later, as the holiday season approaches, it would normally be a time for teachers and students to collaborate on gift-making for loved ones and acts of school-wide generosity. This is also the time of year that Cleveland Schools Book Fund arranges to send home winter reading ideas and tips (and books) to keep our youngest readers engaged in literacy at home during their winter break.

Without in-person learning, Cleveland Schools Book Fund executive director Sharon Brown wanted to find a way to promote winter reading and express support for CMSD’s teachers. The #GivingTuesdayCLE citywide Cleveland Kindness Challenge, a collaborative effort with local nonprofits, creates a perfect opportunity to help remind teachers and students they are not alone. Our schools are a part of a greater community that cares about its youngest learners and those who have gone above and beyond to support their education.

Eric Gordon, CEO of Cleveland Metropolitan Schools, is also rumored to be planning a surprise “kindness reading cameo” that will be shared with students as part of the Cleveland Kindness Challenge.

To participate, any CMSD teacher in grades Pre-K through fourth grade needs to work with his/her class to “collect” 20 acts of kindness during the months of November and December. Once completed, each participating class will receive a classroom set of kindness-themed books and teachers can also request paperback copies for children to read at home.
